A Rich History Rooted in Tradition
Piano making in Estonia dates back to the late 18th century, with records as early as 1779.
By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Estonia was home to nearly 20 independent piano makers, reflecting a flourishing craft.
The most influential figure was Ernst Hiis-Ihse, who studied at Steinway Hamburg and Blüthner before founding his own company in 1893. His designs became the prototype for Estonia Pianos.
After World War II, Hiis was invited to establish a larger facility, which became the Estonia Piano Factory. By the mid-20th century, Estonia Pianos were featured on concert stages across Eastern Europe, with more than 7,400 concert grands produced.
Today, the company is directed by Dr. Indrek Laul, a Juilliard-trained concert pianist, ensuring that Estonia remains one of the few piano manufacturers led by a performing artist.
